Story behind The Homestead:
Over time in Middle Georgia, most of the tenant houses that once housed sharecropper families were torn down to make more room for cotton fields since they were normally constructed in the middle of a field. The Willis Barn sat beyond a tenant house that stayed rented into the sixties with holes in the floorboards where two little girls born into poverty sat and played. The oldest and I were classmates and I thought it was fun to watch their chickens beneath the floorboards peck around for bugs. Of course I wasn’t around on cold morning when the wood stove couldn’t keep up with the cold.
Today, every time I pass an abandoned tenant house, I can’t help but think of the two little girls who moved to town in junior high. Both worked hard to overcome being poor, one became a nurse and the other a schoolteacher.
